This morning, the Chinese Defense Minister spoke at the Shangri-La Dialogue. Regarding Sino-US relations, Wei Fenghe said that the current Sino-US relations are at an important juncture, and the Chinese side believes that the stable development of Sino-US relations conforms to the common interests of the two countries and the world.
As important powers in the world, China and the U.S. cannot achieve peace and development without Sino-U.S. cooperation. Confrontation is not beneficial to both countries and the world. China opposes the definition of Sino-US relations by competition. If China insists on treating China as a threat, rival or even enemy, it will commit a historic strategic mistake.
We ask the U.S. side to:First, do not attack and smear China; second, do not contain and suppress China; third, do not interfere in China’s internal affairs; fourth, do not harm China’s interests.Only in this way can Sino-US relations be improved. China’s position is very clear: dialogue and mutual respect; get along and peaceful coexistence; cooperation for mutual benefit and win-win results; confrontation and support to the end.
The two militaries should strengthen strategic mutual trust, avoid misunderstandings and misjudgments, manage risks and crises, and prevent friction and conflict. China hopes to establish a healthy and stable major-country relationship with the United States, and will also firmly defend its national interests and dignity.
