A Chinese city is deploying a strange ally as the country tries to keep its borders sealed to prevent possible imported cases of Covid-19: geese.
In Chongzuo, a hilly city bordering Vietnam in southern China’s Guangxi autonomous region, about 500 of the large birds have been used alongside dogs and humans to patrol 300 checkpoints along the city’s 533km boundary.
According to the Command Centre for Covid-19 Control and Prevention of Chongzuo, the geese were first introduced into squads in Longzhou last autumn.
“Geese are a good supplement to dogs because they are sensitive to sounds and squawk loudly when they see a stranger. In fact, sometimes they can be more aggressive than dogs,” an official surnamed Li said.
