A Hong Kong medical expert has predicted a voluntary mass testing scheme could discover about 10,000 new Covid-19 cases, given millions of residents were thought to have already been infected, although at least some of the carriers expected to be identified this week may not come forward.
The prediction by Dr Edmund Lam Wing-wo came as health authorities confirmed another 3,138 infections and 90 Covid-related fatalities on Monday, marking the tenth straight day that the daily number of cases dropped. The overall tally of infections since the pandemic began stood at 1,174,560.
Lam, a family doctor who sits on the Centre for Health Protection’s vaccine committee, said he expected about 3 million residents to participate in the three-day, at-home testing exercise, but warned many might not want to report their results to authorities if they turned out to be positive.
The University of Hong Kong earlier estimated that between the start of the fifth wave in late December and May 1, about 4.3 million of the city’s 7.39 million people would be infected.
