A Texas man, George Alvarez, faces eight counts of manslaughter after his SUV allegedly struck a group of pedestrians near a Brownsville migrant-serving homeless shelter.
Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda revealed that Alvarez ran a red light, lost control of his vehicle, and hit 18 people.
Investigators have not yet dismissed the possibility that the crash was intentional. Sauceda confirmed that some victims were from Venezuela.
The tragic incident, which occurred near the Ozanam Center, left at least eight people dead and several others injured as they waited at a nearby bus stop.
