A total of 19 Hong Kong lawmakers attended a pro-Beijing politician’s now-notorious birthday party that exposed them to a suspected Covid-19 case, leading to at least four of them being ordered into quarantine and throwing the start of the new Legislative Council term into disarray.
It has also emerged that one of the party-goers, Junius Ho Kwan-yiu, later attended a meeting in Shenzhen with Xia Baolong, a top Beijing official overseeing the city’s affairs.
Duncan Chiu, Rock Chen Chung-nin, Benson Luk Hon-man and Hong Wen – all lawmakers newly elected under Beijing’s “patriots-only” overhaul of the city’s system – have been sent to Penny’s Bay quarantine centre after being classified as close contacts of the preliminary-positive case, a woman at the Monday party in Wan Chai for the 53rd birthday of Witman Hung Wai-man, a local delegate to the national legislature.
