Abandoned fish nets are being pulled from the ocean off Rio de Janeiro in a project that protects marine life and provides work for low-income Brazilians.
The so-called “ghost nets” are given to seamsters who turn them into multipurpose bags that they sell.
Divers recently spent several days removing a 300-square-meter net that was caught on a sewage pipe near Rio’s famed Ipanema Beach. Such nets can last for years in the ocean, entangling fish and other sea animals and leaching dangerous plastic into the environment.
The recycling project, called Redinha, or little net, is run by Brazil’s Urban Sea Institute.
