An Olympics like no other kicked off in Tokyo on Friday night with National Stadium filled to only a fraction of its capacity.
Emperor Naruhito announced the start of the Summer Games with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga there to oversee the opening ceremony.
The event featured a fireworks show and a light display featuring more than 1,800 drones.
Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka lit the Olympic cauldron at the end of the ceremony.
But not everyone welcomed the delayed Games’ arrival, as hundreds gathered to protest, calling on them to be cancelled to save lives.
