At 11:59 pm on Thursday, May 11, the U.S. puts an end to #Title42, a set of COVID-19 restrictions that have impeded hundreds of thousands of #migrants from seeking #asylum since 2020. With its expiration, a surge in migrant arrivals at the border is expected.
Title 42, implemented by then-President #Trump in March 2020, allowed border agents to quickly expel migrants back to #Mexico, denying them the chance to request asylum. Critics argued that the health rationale was a guise for Trump’s goal of curbing #immigration.
Although President #Biden initially vowed to overturn Trump’s restrictive policies, his administration maintained Title 42 and grappled with record migrant apprehensions at the border.
With the end of the public health emergency, the Biden administration is lifting Title 42 and restoring a regulation, Title 8, that potentially could deny asylum to almost all illegal border crossers.
Migrants will be subject to standard immigration processing under #Title8. However, the rule will make asylum more difficult to obtain, as it requires would-be migrants to apply for refuge in the first country they traverse before arriving in the United States.
