Daniel Penny, a 24-year-old former Marine, surrendered to police in New York City Friday, May 12, after he put a subway passenger in a fatal chokehold. He faces manslaughter charges for killing Jordan Neely, 30, on May 1. Neely was homeless and video footage shows him being pinned to the floor of a train carriage and restrained after passengers said he was shouting and asking for money. The New York Medical Examiner determined that Neely died due to a compression of the neck. Penny’s lawyers said he did not know his actions would have led to Neely’s death.
