Ecuador’s lawmakers voted this week to continue ahead with an impeachment process against President Guillermo Lasso over embezzlement accusations he denies.
The millionaire former banker rejects claims that he turned a blind eye while private investors siphoned money from the state-owned oil-transportation company, Flotec, and another alleged bribery scheme.
The resolution to go forward with the impeachment proceedings won 88 votes out of 116 present in the opposition-controlled National Assembly.
Lasso and his opposition rivals will now have to testify to the Assembly, then face a final vote.
