Hong Kong announced it would close all gazetted public beaches starting from Thursday until further notice to prevent social-distancing violations, while leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said she would “humbly accept” the criticisms of former commerce minister Frederick Ma Si-hang on her handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
The latest briefing came after local researchers on Tuesday estimated some 3.6 million residents had already contracted Covid-19 in the surging fifth wave of infections – far more than have been officially recorded.
Hong Kong reported 29,272 infections and 279 deaths on Wednesday, taking its total since the pandemic began to 790,822 and 4,847, respectively. The rapidly rising death toll has pushed the city’s tally beyond mainland China’s, which stands at 4,636.
