Hong Kong confirmed 7,596 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, the fourth consecutive day the daily caseload was below the 10,000 mark, as health experts warned of a rebound in infections ahead of the holidays next month with data showing an upward trend in transmission.
Data from the University of Hong Kong on the real-time “effective reproductive number” for local Covid-19 cases, which shows how many people are likely to be infected by one person, revealed the number had increased 21.7 per cent from 0.364 on March 17 – the lowest recorded in the city’s fifth wave of infections – to 0.443 on March 21.
The Hospital Authority reported 129 Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, and an additional 20 that occurred earlier but were only just recorded due to backlog. Two elderly patients also died at the CUHK Medical Centre.
The city’s tally of confirmed cases currently stands at 1,143,788, while the total number of related deaths has reached 7,571.
