Hong Kong confirmed 946 new coronavirus infections on Friday, the first time the daily caseload fell below four digits in more than two months.
Of the latest cases, 11 were imported while the rest were locally transmitted. Friday’s caseload was the lowest since February 10, when 986 infections were confirmed.
Health authorities also reported 67 Covid-19-linked deaths, including 31 backlogged ones. The city’s overall case tally since the pandemic began stood at 1,196,284, with 9,069 fatalities.
With case numbers dipping below 1,000, city leader Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor was expected not to hold her regular Covid-19 briefing on Saturday. She had previously said she would stop giving regular updates to the public if the daily caseload was reduced to the hundreds, as that meant the city’s fifth wave of infections had stabilised.
