Hong Kong will close its public beaches from Thursday in a bid to better enforce social-distancing rules, the Post has learned, as authorities confirmed more than 27,700 new coronavirus infections.
“Too many people have gone to the beach unmasked and pictures have also shown a lot of them had ignored the ban on gatherings of more than two people,” a source familiar with government policy said. “The new measure could be announced by the chief executive on Wednesday.”
The source said the move would only affect the 42 beaches managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
A total of 15,809 cases were logged through a new online government portal by residents using at-home rapid antigen tests, in addition to 11,956 confirmed through polymerase chain reaction screenings, bringing the daily total to 27,765. Hong Kong’s overall Covid-19 tally stood at 761,550.
