Hong Kong’s health minister has called an untraceable Delta coronavirus variant case uncovered the day before “strange”, while one expert has suggested the source was likely to be someone infected during quarantine who “slipped through the cracks” and made it into the community.

The preliminary-positive case, reported on Sunday, involved a 23-year-old woman with a high viral load who developed symptoms on Tuesday but did not submit samples until Friday.

The 23-year-old worked at a pet shop in Causeway Bay called Little Boss. She took a staycation at Kew Green Hotel Wanchai Hong Kong and also had hotpot with friends at Haidilao in Yau Ma Tei. An overnight lockdown of her residential block on Tung Sing Road in Aberdeen uncovered no infections.

Respiratory medicine expert Dr Leung Chi-chiu said her infection could have been caused by an import-related case slipping into the community. A person acquiring the infection at a quarantine hotel and then transmitting the virus to the 23-year-old was the most likely scenario, he added.
