Hong Kong’s newest recycling centre could pass for a chic boutique hotel.
GREEN@WAN CHAI is the only one of 11 recycling depots unveiled so far by the Environmental Protection Department to have resulted from a collaboration between the Architectural Services Department and external architects. In 2015, the first opened, in Sha Tin in the eastern New Territories, heralding efforts to promote recycling through “green stations” in each of Hong Kong’s 18 districts.
Like others in the network, it seeks to be more than simply a dumping site for everything from small electrical appliances to fluorescent tubes, glass bottles, paper and plastic. Areas for educational and community activities are incorporated into its elegant design to remind Hongkongers of their responsibility as consumers.
