Lights, camera, action!

These are just some of the many photos taken by Chinese-American photographer Francis Wu. Many of Wu’s Hong Kong photographs make an appearance in old Hong Kong Government Annual Reports, as well as on numerous period travel books and memoirs.

When he relocated to Hong Kong from the US in 1931, he opened his own photographic business. Wu’s eponymous studio, located in Gloucester Arcade, in Central, remained a popular landmark for decades.

Wu maintained that his Chinese ancestry gave him a particular insight into the aesthetics of photography of Chinese people; beguiling scroll painting effects can be discerned through his use of light on smoke, mist and other ethereal reflective effects.
