More than 10,000 civilians have died in the Russian siege of Mariupol, Mayor Vadym Boychenko said. He added that the death toll could surpass 20,000 as weeks of attacks leave bodies “carpeted through the streets”.⁠

His statement came as unverified reports emerged of Russian forces using chemical weapons in Mariupol, which Britain said it was investigating with allies.⁠

Boychenko also accused Russian forces of blocking humanitarian convoys from entering the city for weeks in an attempt to conceal the carnage there from the outside world.⁠
