New Zealand photographer Brian Brake is known for his rare images of China in the 1950s. He lived in Hong Kong on and off from the late 1950s to the mid-1970s.
Commissioned by Time-Life to photograph Sydney and Hong Kong for a series of books on great cities of the world, Brake based himself in the city from 1962 to 1976.
His subjects ranged from rooftop schools, which were critical for the growth of primary education in the 1950s and 1960s, to a cook leaning over a flaming wok to Hong Kong’s burgeoning textile manufacturing and other clothing industries.
