New Zealand, the only country deemed “low risk” for Covid-19 by the Hong Kong government, will lose that designation next week, moving to the medium-risk category, in which travellers are subject to longer quarantine requirements.
In announcing the decision, which will take effect on November 17, health authorities on Wednesday said the change came as a result of the country’s shift in pandemic strategy.
“New Zealand authorities announced earlier that they would pursue a policy of ‘living with the virus’ … We note that the number of confirmed cases there has been increasing,” a government spokesman said.
“As the risk of the importation of cases has heightened, we have to tighten the quarantine requirements for persons arriving in Hong Kong from New Zealand.”
