On May 4, 2022, NBC News was among the first news outlets to say the U.S. had surpassed 1 million COVID-19 deaths. Today, a year later, that figure has risen to 1,130,662, according to the most recent CDC data.
Over 1,000 people in the U.S. are still dying from COVID-19 each week and nearly 1,400 are being hospitalized each day, according to the CDC.
While the U.S. is set to lift the federal COVID-19 public health emergency on May 11, over 88,000 new cases were still reported in the last week of CDC data, putting the total number of U.S. infections at 104,538,730 since the pandemic began.
