People who are discriminated against based on their weight or height will soon have a way to fight back in New York. The City Council on Thursday, May 12, passed a bill that adds weight and height to the list of 27 characteristics that are barred from discrimination in housing, jobs, or public accommodation. The bill includes exemptions in some situations where physical requirements are needed to do a job, such as a police officer or firefighter.

Prejudice against people due to their weight and height can impact salaries, job reviews, and the support they get at work.

A study published in the journal Economics & Human Biology found that for women, a one-unit increase in their body mass index is directly associated with 1.83 percent lower hourly wages. For women of color, discrimination based on race is often tied to discrimination based on weight.

Other studies have correlated height with income where taller people are more likely to be seen as leaders and taller men more likely to get managerial positions, NY1 reports.
