Some of China’s biggest cities are seeing clearer skies as pollution levels continue to fall.
Beijing, Shanghai and Hebei are on track to meet their winter targets, largely thanks to Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s “war on pollution”, launched in 2014.
Beijing was even hailed by the United Nations as an example of how quickly things can be turned around. The average concentration of the most harmful particles in the capital fell to its lowest level since its integrated air quality monitoring network started operating in 2013.
However, pollution outside “priority areas” worsened as dirty industries were relocated rather than shut down and coal and oil use continued to increase.
