Suspected Covid-19 patients forced to wait outside Hong Kong’s public hospitals in the cold for hours for admission would be moved indoors within the day, officials pledged, after a political heavyweight demanded the government make it a top priority.

The admonishment from National People’s Congress Standing Committee member Tam Yiu-chung came as Hong Kong’s fifth wave continued to surge, with 3,629 new coronavirus infections confirmed and another 7,600 preliminary-positive cases also recorded.

Two chronically ill patients, a 62-year-old man and a 96-year-old woman, were the latest coronavirus-related fatalities, taking the death toll to 261.

“We are worried about patients staying outdoors. As the weather is going to be colder in the coming few days, no matter how difficult it will be, we will do our best to move all those patients indoors within today,” Dr Sara Ho Yuen-ha, a chief manager of the Hospital Authority, said.
