Team China’s Zhu Yi was all smiles after successfully finishing her routine to thunderous applause.
The US-born figure skater fell twice last week and left the ice in tears both times, drawing vitriol online.
This time, Chinese social media was much more positive about her performance. “Zhu Yi scoring 53.44 points” became the No 1 searched topic on Weibo.
“She didn’t fall and she kept her smile. It’s not bad. Let’s keep encouraging her, she is still young,” said one comment that drew over 8,000 likes.
Her modest score landed her just shy of qualifying for the women’s short programme final.
