Tens of thousands braved the rain in London on Saturday morning to join in the fanfare surrounding the coronation of Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
Wearing crowns and robes, the king and members of his family appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to greet the throngs of well wishers following the glamorous coronation event at Westminster Abbey, where international dignitaries filled the rows.
It was the first coronation in Britain in 70 years. The monarch donned the crimson velvet Robe of State, which was worn by his grandfather, King George VI, at his 1937 coronation. Charles was crowned king with the historic St. Edward’s Crown, used since the coronation of King Charles II in 1661.
William, Prince of Wales, heir to the throne, and his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, both wore formal robes and mantels, and Cate wore a headpiece made of silver and crystal leaves instead of a tiara.
King Charles’ son Prince Harry, no longer a working member of the royal family, wore morning dress.
