The city of Buffalo, New York held a moment of silence and rang church bells to mark one year since a gunman killed 10 people and wounded three others in a racist attack at a supermarket.

“The racially motivated mass shooting shook our community to its core. It was the day the unthinkable happened,” Mayor Byron Brown said in announcing plans for the commemoration.

The attack sparked condemnation against extremism and white supremacist violence in the U.S.

Relatives of victims spoke before Congress about gun reform and white supremacy, while also holding events to address food insecurity, as the neighborhood’s only grocery store was closed for two months.

U.S. President Joe Biden penned an op-ed in USA Today, honoring those killed and calling for legislation to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

The gunman, Payton Gendron, was sentenced to life in prison without parole in February. #cgtnamerica
