The head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, submitted her resignation to U.S. President Biden on Friday, May 5. Her final day as director of the CDC will be June 30.
Walensky said of her time at the CDC: “I have never been prouder of anything I have done in my professional career,” and cited the waning pandemic as an appropriate time to transition to the next part of her life. The World Health Organization declared the end of the COVID-19 global public health emergency on Friday.
Walensky directed the federal agency for the last two years. She previously worked at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital as an infectious-diseases specialist.
Biden said in a statement that “Dr. Walensky leaves CDC a stronger institution, better positioned to confront health threats and protect Americans. We have all benefited from her service and dedication to public health, and I wish her the best in her next chapter.”
