The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No 8 warning signal at 5.20pm on Tuesday as Tropical Cyclone Kompasu, the second typhoon to hit the city in four days, gathered strength.

Kompasu – named after the Japanese word for compass – was about 470km southeast of the city at 5pm and forecast to move west at 25km/h towards Hainan Island.

In preparation for any No 8, members of the public are advised to lock all windows and doors and reinforce gates if needed.

The Observatory also recommends putting adhesive tape across large window panes to reduce the chance of shattering glass. People should also avoid staying on the streets or near windows and move furniture and valuables away from exposed areas.
