Thousands of incense sticks are laid out to dry in Yongchun county, as the clock ticks with the approach of Lunar New Year.
It’s the busiest time of year for the 300 or so manufacturers in the mountainous area of China. The workers there supply much of the world’s incense and one producer can churn out more than 15 million sticks in one day.
An around-the-clock production process involves up to 18 separate stages during which bamboo sticks are coated in fragrant herbs and spices and then dusted with powders of deep purple, red and yellow. The sticks are then dried by the sun.
