Ukraine currently has 34,000 people living with tuberculosis, the highest of any European country. Tuberculosis, which easily threads through the air and infects the lungs, is on the rise in places like Ukraine and Sudan.
The world being thrown into chaos by a three-year pandemic deprived millions of people of access to essential health care services for ongoing ailments, World health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
Yet conflicts in places like Ukraine, Sudan, Ethiopia and Syria have made “life-saving services even harder to access for people living with tuberculosis.” Ghebreyesus added that the challenges “have been a setback in the fight against TB, reversing some of the significant gains we have made over the past 20 years in expanding access to prevention, testing and treatment.”
