Weeks of careful planning – acquiring visas, booking flights and quarantine hotels – were upended as Hong Kong added dozens of countries to its high-risk Group A list.
“I am coming back on the last day of the Chinese New Year so that I can go to school the next day. But because of the 21 days [quarantine], I’m going to miss a whole week of school,” said Amy Chu.
Separated from her family since August 2019, she had planned to fly to Australia with her brother for a reunion. But they have been unable to extend their quarantine hotel booking.
“Just like that, everything has gone,” said another Hong Kong resident, who is of Russian-Canadian background.
She was devastated to learn that her mother and sister could not fly from Canada and Italy to visit her in the city.
“There were just so many expectations about finally meeting my family. Not only for myself wanting to see loved ones but also for my children.”
