Why are ethnic communities in #India fighting?
Ethnic clashes in #Manipur, India, resulted in dozens killed and property destroyed. The violence began after indigenous communities protested the demand of the #Meitei tribe for official government-recognized tribal status. Meitei’s inclusion in Scheduled Tribe category would grant them forest land access and government job guarantees.
Recognized Scheduled Tribes, such as #Kukis, fear losing control of ancestral land. Home Minister Amit Shah claimed the situation was under control and urged peace.
Thousands of troops were deployed and curfews were imposed in several districts. On Friday, May 5, officials relocated around 20,000 individuals to army-guarded camps for safety.
