Chinese space tourism is set to launch, with private company Deep Blue Aerospace selling tickets for 1.5 million yuan (about US$210,000) each for a rocket ride in 2027.
Based in Jiangsu province, the company plans to take its first passengers on a 12-minute journey, including at least five minutes of weightlessness in space. The tickets went on sale during a live stream on Taobao and sold out in just 20 minutes. More tickets will be available next month.
The buyers each paid a 50,000-yuan deposit. To qualify, they must be between 18 and 60 years old and in good health. A thorough medical evaluation will determine their fitness for the trip, as health issues like heart problems or epilepsy could pose challenges.
The upcoming flight will be a suborbital trip, meaning the rocket will reach space but not orbit the Earth. Deep Blue Aerospace is committed to ensuring safety and plans to conduct numerous tests over the next two years before launching commercial space tourism in 2027.
