COVID-19 is no longer a global public health emergency, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday, May 5.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cited the downward trend of the pandemic, increasing population immunity from vaccination and infection, decreasing mortality rates, and easing pressure on health systems as reasons for the decision.

Tedros said most countries have returned to life as it was before the pandemic.

Since the WHO first declared the emergency on January 30, 2020, estimates put the number of people who have died worldwide due to the virus between 7 million and 20 million.

Tedros warned against the dismantling of systems built to fight the virus and emphasized the need for continued vigilance against potential new variants.

The WHO now advises countries to transition from emergency response measures to managing COVID-19 like other infectious diseases, acknowledging the long-lasting economic and social impacts of the pandemic.
