Hong Kong authorities are in the process of procuring millions of Covid-19 rapid testing kits in the hope that all residents will conduct a round of “universal” screening, the city leader has revealed, as she warned the Omicron variant had brought about the worst wave of coronavirus infections since the pandemic started.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam also said on Friday that the authorities would boost the city’s daily coronavirus screening capacity from 100,000 tests to 300,000, partly by re-establishing a laboratory at Ma On Shan sports centre.
“We are procuring RAT [rapid antigen tests] in the tens of millions. We think they will arrive soon. We will launch a universal RAT. Each member of the Hong Kong public will obtain one kit to do a test,” she told a press briefing.
Lam also said she needed to tighten social-distancing rules as public transport use had only dropped by about 20 to 30 percent in past weeks.
