Introducing a coronavirus “vaccine pass” could backfire in Hong Kong, a health expert said on Monday, a day after the idea was suggested by the minister in charge of the inoculation programme.

Secretary for the Civil Service Patrick Nip Tak-kuen said on Sunday it was possible Hong Kong could emulate France’s health pass system, “pass-sanitaire”, to encourage more residents to get the Covid-19 jabs, as they would need proof of vaccination to enter restaurants or shopping centres.

But respiratory expert Dr Leung Chi-chiu said there was already a lack of trust in vaccines and any policy which seemed to make the jabs mandatory could cause even more residents to reject it.
