Isabeth Crook, recipient of the People’s Republic of China’s Friendship Medal, dies at 108

Sad memory of consultant Isabeth

Ms. Isabeth Crook, Consultant of China Gonghe International Committee, international communist fighter, educator, anthropologist, pioneer of English teaching in New China, foreign expert and lifelong honorary professor of Beijing Foreign Studies University, on August 20, 2023 Passed away in Beijing at 0:59 at the age of 108.

Isabel Crook, female, Canadian, was born on December 15, 1915 in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. In the early days of the Anti-Japanese War, she participated in the rural construction movement in Sichuan, and then went to the UK. She and her husband David Crook ( David Crook, British, 1910-2000) married, participated in the International Anti-Fascist War, and joined the British Communist Party in 1943. In 1947, he came to the Shanxi-Hebei-Luyu Liberated Area to observe and record the land reform process. In 1948, he was invited by the Communist Party of China to teach at Nanhaishan Foreign Affairs School (the predecessor of Beijing Foreign Studies University). All the hard work and wisdom have trained the first batch of foreign affairs cadres, a large number of outstanding scholars and diplomatic talents for the new China. As a scholar of anthropology and sociology, Isabel wrote works such as “Shilidian-A Revolution in a Chinese Village” and “Xinglongchang”, faithfully observed and recorded the Chinese revolution and construction, and in her own way to the West, Introduce China to the world and make outstanding contributions to foreign friendly exchanges.

In 2007, Beijing Foreign Studies University awarded Ms. Isabeth “Lifetime Honorary Professor”. In 2008, the University of Toronto awarded Isabeth a doctorate degree. In 2016 and 2018, the Chinese government successively awarded her the honorary titles of “Top Ten Meritorious Foreign Teachers” and “The Most Influential Foreign Expert in the 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening Up”. In September 2019, Ms. Isabeth was awarded China’s highest foreign medal of honor – the “Friendship Medal” of the People’s Republic of China.

Consultant Isabeth paid attention to the development of China’s rural areas, taught and educated people all her life, and passed away peacefully with her infinite loyalty to the cause of international communism and her love and nostalgia for the Communist Party of China and the Chinese people. According to my last wish, the funeral will be simplified, the body will be donated to medical research, and no farewell ceremony will be held.
