Meta’s Instagram Threads, a social media app that rivals Elon Musk’s X, is getting a significant upgrade with a new search interface. The update, announced on Monday, allows users to filter search results by user profiles and date ranges, making it easier to find specific posts.
While the new search functionality is not as comprehensive as X’s advanced search, which offers a range of filtering options, it brings Threads’ search capabilities more in line with Bluesky’s search, which also allows users to filter by user profiles, date ranges, and more. However, Bluesky’s app does not currently surface all its filtering options in its user interface.
Prior to this update, Threads’ search was relatively basic, allowing users to search by keyword or keywords and filter results by either “Top” (most engaged posts) or “Recent” (latest posts). The new search functionality will be available to global users in the coming weeks.
Meta has been rapidly releasing new features to counter the threat from Bluesky, which has gained popularity as an alternative to X. Bluesky’s user base has grown significantly in recent weeks, with the app now claiming nearly 24 million users. To compete, Meta has released features such as the ability to choose a default feed, an updated algorithm, and an upcoming feature called Starter Packs, which allows users to curate their own recommendation lists.
