340 people were investigated by the police for suspected fraud or being a money mule, with the total amount involved exceeding 10.2 million yuan.
The Singapore Police Force issued a statement on Thursday (February 20) saying that the Bureau of Commercial Affairs and the Seventh Police Stations launched a two-week island-wide law enforcement operation from February 7 to February 20. 229 men and 111 women are assisting police investigations on suspicion of fraud or acting as money mules, aged between 16 and 77.
The investigation shows that these 340 people believe that they are involved in more than 1,200 fraud cases, including job search, e-commerce, investment, impersonation of government officials and impersonation of friends, with a total amount of more than 10.2 million yuan.
These suspects may face charges of fraud, money laundering, or providing payment services without a license. If a fraud is convicted, it may face up to 10 years in prison and fines; if a money laundering is convicted, it may face up to 10 years in prison, or a fine of up to 500,000 yuan, or both; if a payment service is not provided without a license, You can face up to three years in prison, or a fine of up to 125,000 yuan, or both.
The police stressed that any suspected fraud will be taken seriously and violators will be severely punished according to law. The police also reminded the public not to provide bank accounts or phone numbers to others to avoid being involved in fraud cases and becoming a scammer accomplice.
