Singapore was elected to the International Navigation Benchmark Council and continued to do its best to coordinate the maritime navigation assistance system.

The Ministry of Transportation issued a statement on Thursday (February 20) saying that Singapore was elected as one of the board members of the organization at the International Organization for Marine Aids to Navigation (IALA) conference, with a term of office from 2025 to 2027.

The predecessor of the International Navigation Beacon was the maritime non-governmental organization “International Navigation Beacon”, which was established in 1957. It was officially changed to an intergovernmental international organization in August last year; the first conference of the International Navigation Beacon is currently (February 18-21 ) was held in Singapore.

Singapore has joined the International Association of Navigation Map since 1972 and has served as a member of the association since 2018. Muhammad Segar, Chief Maritime Officer of the Maritime and Port Authority, will continue to represent Singapore on the IBB Council.

The statement pointed out that as a member of the International Navigation Benchmark Organization, Singapore can strengthen cooperation with the organization and other member states, including the formulation of policies and the approval of technical standards to better coordinate maritime navigation systems and promote relations between international partners.

The International Navigation Organization Conference adopted the International Navigation Organization Declaration, also known as the “Singapore Declaration”, to reflect the collective commitment of member states to continue international cooperation. The Maritime Bureau will support relevant training and capacity-building of member states through the organization's global academies association in accordance with the memorandum of understanding signed with the International Navigation Organization.
