The World Swimming Championships and Masters, which will be hosted by Singapore this year, are expected to attract about 40,000 inbound tourists and bring about 60 million yuan in tourism revenue.

Cai Ruilong, senior deputy governor of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Social and Family Development, said in a question on Thursday (February 27) that as of January this year, the authorities have posted more than 5.8 million views on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Weibo and Xiaohongshu.

He revealed that the 2025 World Swimming Championships and Masters are expected to attract about 40,000 international tourists to Singapore, including spectators, athletes, officials, production teams and media.

He mentioned that this is just a conservative estimate, noting: “These international tourists are expected to bring about an increase in tourism revenue of about 60 million yuan. The final data will be confirmed after the event is over.”

In order to host swimming and synchronized swimming competitions, Kallang will also build a temporary swimming pool. Cai Ruilong said that during the 2025 World Swimming Championships, water polo and diving competitions will be held at the OCBC Aquatic Centre, so temporary facilities must be set up for swimming and synchronized swimming events.

He added that the construction costs of temporary venues are still being finalized and are expected to be similar to the cost of building temporary facilities for the World Swimming Championships in other host cities.

Cai Ruilong emphasized that temporary facilities are not only used in the World Swimming Championships, but also the Masters held from July 26 to August 22 this year will come in handy.

“We are looking at whether the use of temporary facilities can be expanded, including training and competition venues for other local and regional events, also for athletes to train and open to the public. If feasible, this will help share the cost of organizing the World Swimming Championships. Whether it is feasible is yet to be studied and further details will be announced in the future.”
