Singapore University of Social Sciences will set up a permanent campus in the city center, with the location of the former Wucaofang and its surrounding areas.

Education Minister Chan Zhensheng announced the news Thursday (March 6) when debating the Ministry of Education’s spending budget on the Congressional Appropriations Committee.

Founded in 2017, the New University of Social Sciences is the sixth autonomous university in the local area, providing the required courses for different learners including working adults to help more Singaporeans obtain certification and degrees.

Chen Zhensheng said that the classrooms of the New University of Social Sciences are currently distributed in multiple rental venues, including on the main campus of Jin Wentai, and such an arrangement is not ideal. Therefore, as Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Huang Xuncai announced in his statement on the 2025 fiscal year budget, the New University of Social Sciences will establish a permanent campus in the city and open social-focused courses to provide lifelong learning courses for people of all ages.

The urban campus of the New University of Social Sciences will be located at the former site of the former Rochor Centre and is expected to be completed by the mid-2030s.

Chen Zhensheng said that the new campus of the New University of Social Sciences will be conducive to teachers and students, industry and society, to jointly innovate knowledge and new value propositions; at the same time, it can establish cross-generational connections with alumni, industry and community partners, bridge different views, contribute to society, and inspire people to learn for life.

The Ministry of Education encourages teachers, students and alumni of the New University of Social Sciences to brainstorm and work together to provide advice on the design of the new campus.
