By September this year, Bukit Pan will completely eliminate the first generation of trains in the light rail system, and the renovation project of the entire system will be completed as scheduled next year.

Metro operator SMRT posted a Facebook post on Thursday (March 6) saying that SMRT's goal is to eliminate the old first-generation trains by the end of September this year. Meanwhile, SMRT is working with the Land Transport Authority to enhance systems, including security sensors and a hot box detectors.

The axle temperature detector can detect train problems early by monitoring the temperature changes of the train axle box, thereby avoiding serious failures.

Bukit Pan has made the terrain uneven, causing a lot of pressure to the light rail system, and has occurred from time to time since it was opened to traffic in 1999. The Land Communications Bureau spent more than 344 million yuan in 2018 to undergo a major renovation of the system and is expected to be completed in 2026.

The project includes replacing the power supply rails, installing a new signal system, replacing 19 first-generation light rail trains, renovating 13 second-generation trains launched in 2015, and installing new equipment that can monitor the operation of the system in real time and strengthening the prediction and maintenance work to improve service reliability.

By the middle of this year, about half of the second-generation trains will be renovated and re-entered for service; by the end of the year, all 19 third-generation trains will arrive in my country. Since August last year, four third-generation new trains have been put into service, gradually replacing the first-generation train.

The main challenge of the transition period is to operate the refurbished second-generation trains and the brand new third-generation trains at the same time, SMRT said. The new train is currently facing some running-in problems, and the situation is consistent with the bathtub curve. According to the concept of “bathtub curve”, the equipment will experience more and more situations in the early stage of operation and then enter a stable stage.

SMRT mentioned that SMRT Metro will continue to cooperate with engineers from the Land Transportation Bureau and the French transportation manufacturer Alstom, which led the renovation project. At this time, they will also ensure that train services are running on time.
