In the future, the public can self-service assessment of the risk of oral problems such as severe gum disease through the Singapore Health Service Group's mobile application “Health Buddy”.

The National Dental Centre, a subsidiary of Singapore Insurance Group, issued a statement on Monday (March 10) saying that the public can enable the self-service oral examination program by simply clicking the “Dental Care” function button on the main interface of the mobile phone application.

Self-service examinations are divided into two options: Simplified Nomogram and Oral Frailty Index-8. Users can understand the general health of the oral cavity by answering six to eight questions prompted by the application. The National Dental Center recommends that if the examination results indicate “high risk”, users should make an appointment with a dentist as soon as possible.

The statement said that recent studies have shown that about 90% of Singaporean adults suffer from different types of gum diseases, including mild gingivitis and more severe periodontitis. If these oral problems are not solved in time, they may cause teeth to fall and even cause more complex health problems such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The research survey also found that nearly 70% of respondents had a shallow awareness of preventing oral health and did not understand the importance of regular oral examinations. In addition, about 12.5% of Chinese people aged 65 and above have all their teeth lost.
