The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth is considering establishing a new Singapore Design Museum to showcase excellent local designs and enhance the public's design aesthetics. The museum may be located at the Old St. Joseph's Academy.
The news was announced on Monday (March 10) when the Congressional Appropriations Committee debated the spending budget for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.
The National Administration of Cultural Heritage is currently conducting a feasibility study to assess whether the national monument, Old SJI Building, is suitable as a new museum.
The Old St. Joseph's Academy was built in 1867 and was listed as a national monument in 1992. It was renamed the Singapore Art Gallery in 1996. It is the main building of the Art Gallery.
With the museum's exhibition hall in the Tanjong Pagar Distribution Park, authorities discussed with some stakeholders, including local designers, believing that the old St. Joseph's Academy is likely to become the site of the Singapore Design Museum.
Tang Zhenhui said that as UNESCO's creative design capital, Singapore is committed to integrating design and creativity into daily life. Singaporean designers have gained international recognition by driving innovation and positively impacting society through their works and projects.
After the feasibility study is completed, the authorities will release more details.
