Sushil Sukumaran Nair, deputy executive chairman of Dezun Law Firm, was appointed by the President as a Judicial Committee member of the Supreme Court for one term, effective from April 1, 2025.
Judicial members and high court judges have the same powers, but judges are permanent, while judicial members have specific terms.
The Prime Minister's Office issued a statement on Wednesday (March 12) saying that Sushir is currently the deputy executive chairman of Drew & Napier LLC, mainly leading the corporate restructuring and debt restructuring business team.
Susil received a Bachelor of Law (Honors) from the National University of Singapore in 1989, joined the Singapore Bar Association in 1990, and then joined Dezun Law Firm to practice. He has about 35 years of professional experience.
He has held several leadership positions in the local legal community, including Chairman of the Litigation Committee and Bankruptcy Committee of the Bar Association of Singapore, and Director of the Accounting Committee of Singapore.
Currently, he is also a member of the Bankruptcy Law Review Committee established by the Ministry of Justice, and is also a senior member and member of the Board of Directors of the Singapore Bankruptcy Practitioners Association (IPAS), responsible for promoting the legal development of local bankruptcy and corporate restructuring.
Susil made a key contribution to the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (Temporary Aid Measures) Act and was awarded the Star of Public Services for Coronavirus Response in 2023 and also won the Singapore Ministry of Justice Partner of the Year Award.
In addition, his practice covers the entire Asia-Pacific region, especially Indonesia and China, and has participated in several major cross-border restructuring projects in Asia.
The Asia-Pacific Law Top 500 has included Sucille in the Hall of Fame, and the International Who's Who in Law has also awarded him the title of global elite thought leader. In the past 17 years, he has also been selected as the first-class lawyer in the field of restructuring or bankruptcy by Chambers Asia Pacific, and his professional ability and contributions are widely recognized.
After this appointment, the Singapore Supreme Court will consist of a total of 35 judges, including Justice Mei Tashun, three Appeal Court judges, four Appeal Trial Court judges, 17 Supreme Court judges, five Judicial Committee members and five senior judges, plus 24 international judges.
