Although the family's socio-economic status is related to the grade sixth grade's leave school test scores, the 25% of students with the lowest socio-economic status in my country have better performance in all core areas such as reading, mathematics, science and creative thinking than the average level of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Huang Weizhong, the Ministry of Education and Senior Deputy Minister of Finance, said in response to a question from Yishunji Constituency Councillor Huang Guoguang on Monday (March 3) that in the past three years, the relationship between family background and examination results has remained stable. Students with disadvantaged backgrounds in the local area perform well if they are in accordance with international standards.
According to the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the performance of the 25% of students with the lowest socio-economic status in my country is better than the average level of OECD students.
The International Student Assessment Project is an OECD survey of 15-year-old students in more than 80 countries and economies to evaluate their learning achievements in mathematics and Chinese language. Chinese students have always achieved excellent results in this survey.
Huang Weizhong said that the government will continue to adopt various measures, such as the “KidSTART” and the UPLIFT program to assist children and parents in low-income families, to ensure that the education system can provide all students with the full potential regardless of family background.
